From: "Bill Mechlenburg" Subject: Re: 15 % TAX CUT!!! Date: 30 Oct 1996 02:05:15 GMT This [Clinton reducing deficit] is typical of Clinton hyperbole. He has been pounding his chest and taking credit for reducing the deficit for one year to $107 billion dollars when he really had little to do with it. the deficit is down for the following reasons. 1. Defense spending is down due to the collapse of the Soviet Union which Clinton had nothing to do with. 2. The deficit is down because we are in the zenith of a normal economic up cycle which began before he took office and which he had nothing to do with. His economic stimulus package was rejected by his own Democratic Congress. Greenspan had more to do with this than anyone else. 3. The Republican Congress restrained spending over constant cries by Clinton that they were making mean spirited cuts when all they were doing was reducing some of the waste. 4. Clinton's all time record high tax increase also contributed. Despite his mendacious sophistry, Clinton is a big spending big taxing liberal and is only talking up cutting the deficit because its election time. But lest we all go out and celebrate this event, let us sober ourselves with the following additional facts. 1. The national debt increased by over one trillion dollars on Clinton's watch. One Robin does not make a spring!. 2. Clinton's unrealistically optimistic budget for the next four years calls for the addition of another one TRILLION dollars to the national debt and he submitted three earlier budgets that showed deficits for the foreseeable future and he finally submitted a phony budget showing balancing by 2002 only after being forced into it by a Republican Congress. He conveniently and deceptively placed most of the difficult cuts in spending in years after he leaves office. "Clinton's an unusually good liar. Unusually good. Do you realize that?"
